#005 The Mask of Control (Part 1): Perfectionism & Micromanaging

Season #1 Episode #5

“What if the thing you think you’re controlling… is actually controlling you?”

Welcome back to Unmute Your Mic™.

Let’s be real—so many of us look like high-performing, high-capacity leaders on paper…

But behind the success?

We’re exhausted from managing every detail.

We’re frustrated our teams or partners “just don’t get it.”

We’re overthinking every move to make sure it’s “done right.”

And all that control?

It’s costing us real peace.

In today’s episode, I’m pulling back the curtain on The Mask of Control—and getting uncomfortably honest about my own story.

As a top-performing banker and sales leader, I built my reputation on results.

I thought my way was the best way—because it worked.

I didn’t need feedback.

I didn’t want it.

Because if I controlled the outcome, I felt safe.

But the truth?

That mindset bled into everything.

My marriage.

My friendships.

How I listened (or didn’t).

How I led.

Today we’re unmasking two of the biggest ways control is running the show for high achievers:

✅ Perfectionism:

Your relentless standard isn’t just excellence—it’s fear of criticism.

It’s delaying launches, editing yourself to death, never being satisfied.

It’s worshiping “polished” over progress.

📖 “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” — 2 Corinthians 12:9

What you’ll gain?

Freedom to actually finish. Permission to be human. Space to let others see the real you.

✅ Micromanaging:

That “hands-on” leadership style?

It might really be fear of trusting people.

You delegate but hover.

You ask for help but don’t accept it.

You want input but only if they agree with you.

📖 “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.” — Proverbs 3:5

What you’ll gain?

Stronger teams.

Deeper relationships.

More time and headspace to lead—not just manage.

This episode isn’t about shaming your hustle.

It’s about helping you see:

Your need for control may have protected you once.

But now? It’s blocking your peace.

We’re talking real solutions, real Scripture, and real change.

👀 And just so you know—this is only Part 1.

I didn’t even get to hyper-independence (the “I got it” syndrome that isolates so many of us).

That’s coming in Part 2.

👀 COMING NEXT:

We didn’t even get to hyper-independence in this one. Part 2 is coming soon to talk about why “I got it” might be breaking your back—and your connections.
